Expanded metal is a versatile and economical industrial product with countless applications. It is made from a single sheet of high quality metal. The sheet metal is uniformly slit and stretched (expanded) to form diamond-shaped openings that allow light, air, heat and sound to pass freely. Expanded metal sheets also feature high strength, rigidity and light weight.
No metal is lost in the manufacturing process, so expanded metal is often a cost-effective alternative to perforated metal.
As a well-established supplier of metal products, Dongfu offers four basic types of expanded metal: standard expanded metal, flat expanded metal, heavy-duty expanded metal grating and decorative expanded metal. Materials offered include carbon steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminum. As well as custom fabrication in a variety of gauges, opening sizes and sheet sizes.
Standard expanded metal, or raised metal, is made by shearing and stretching a sheet of metal on a press using a set of dies to form a diamond-shaped opening. The solid intersection of the two strands is known as the bond, and they are located on top of each other, creating a raised effect. This adds extra strength and stiffness to the expanded metal and also provides a directional non-slip surface.
The flattened expanded metal is a manufactured raised expanded metal that is then cold rolled by machine to produce a flat, smooth diamond surface. This flattened expanded metal is also approximately 5% lighter than standard expanded metal, making it ideal for applications that require flexibility while still maintaining maximum strength and durability.
Expanded metal grating is a heavy-duty expanded metal, manufactured from carbon steel sheets or plates. Expanded metal grating will not be welded together and there are no joints. Because each plate is strong steel as used individually, like metal bar grating. Its primary role is to carry gravity and it is ideal for catwalk and platform applications.
Decorative expanded metal, as the name implies, is used for architectural decoration. Different thicknesses, opening sizes, projection heights and colors can create a myriad of designs. This makes it widely used for curtain walls, ceilings, building facades, room dividers, etc.
